Shopping for a new HVAC System is challenging and time-consuming. What’s more, is understanding unfamiliar technical terms and learning how HVAC Systems work.

Whether installing a new air conditioning system or upgrading an existing system for increased SEER rating units, Caloosa Cooling has you covered. We are Southwest Florida’s most trusted HVAC Company, helping clients save costs on energy bills, conserve the environment and live healthier lifestyles in North Port, Florida.

What is SEER?

SEER, a measurement for air conditioning and heating efficiency, stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating.

A SEER Rating is calculated by dividing the cooling output for a typical cooling season by the total amount of energy a unit uses in Watt per Hours.

SEER is an asset to the US Department of Energy (DOE) as minimum energy efficiency standards are required on household appliances (in this case on HVAC systems). For HVAC systems, SEER ratings are used.

What are the types of SEER Ratings?

1.13 to 18.5 (Single-Stage Air Conditioners)

  • Runs at full capacity
  • More turn on and off
  • Single-stage / Multispeed blowers

2.16-20 SEER (Two-Stage Air Conditioners)

  • Two Capacities: Low- 35% to 40% power / High is 100% power
  • Most of the time runs low variable-speed Blowers

3.19-26 SEER

  • Variable Capacity Compressors
  • Modulates speed – 25% Low to 100%

Why are there different SEER Ratings in separate regions?

1. Southwest

  • Minimum Rating: 14
  • States: Arizona, California, Nevada, and New Mexico

2. Southeast

  • Minimum Rating: 14
  • States: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Territories

3. North

  • Minimum Rating: 13
  • States: The remainder of the United States

What is a good SEER Rating?

Generally, the higher the SEER rating, the better. Air conditioning systems manufactured after 2015 have ratings of at least 13 to 26, while lower-end models have lower ratings. Most air conditioning units produced 15 years ago have between an 8 and 10 SEER Rating.

There is no magic SEER Rating. However, replacing an old unit with an 8 SEER Rating to a unit with a 16 SEER Rating will significantly decrease cooling expenses.

What is the Best SEER for Florida?

There are a variety of air conditioners in the Florida market and choosing a unit with the right SEER rating can be tricky. However, with Florida’s warm and humid climate, a higher-SEER unit makes sense.

When it comes to questions about AC systems, avoid confusion and call Caloosa Cooling.

What are the Benefits of High-SEER HVAC Units?

1. Cost Reduction

Less energy, less money spending on energy cost.

2. Rebates/Incentives

Government agencies and manufacturers offer rebates and incentives to high-SEER air conditioning buyers.

3. Eco-Friendly

Higher efficiency units use less energy and emit fewer greenhouse gases. With less electricity used, fewer fossil fuels are burned which is beneficial to the planet.

4. Humidity Control

High-efficiency units maintain air temperature and are more effective in removing moisture from the air. Modern units have modulated systems to run long cycles at lower pressures and are equipped with moisture removal systems to combat mold and various airborne health issues.
